“They usually sit there all prim and proper, trying to seem professional.” She reminded him. It was when she made them convince her to let them back to see him that she got to see a glimpse of how they really acted. She furrowed her eyebrows slightly when he mentioned the hickeys, “Sorry to disappoint.” He hadn’t mentioned them before. She got the clasp of his pants undone and started on his zipper, trying to not seem to distracted by him pulling his undershirt off. He always had these layers, it was easier for him to get her disrobed, in the long run.

“I know exactly how they sit there. They want to seem like nothing but a professional while they did there. And half the time, you won’t see their real sides until they get a lot more comfortable.” And then he could start to see those real personalities. He was a very observant though, so he could make assumptions about them that were generally true just by looking at them. “That’s alright,” he chuckled. “You at least met with him and tried to get me information.” That was what he really wanted her to do. Since she had both hands preoccupied with his belt and zipper, he could lean forward and get her bra unclasped at least.

“I’m sure you can read them well enough during an interview to know enough what they’re like.” He was good at reading people, even when they were trying their hardest to seem professional. “You could have told me then that it was because of Lucas.” She shot him a knowing look, getting his pants worked down past his hips.

“Yes, you know very well that I can read people during an interview. I read you pretty well. And you were very professional with me.” But he could see that she was young and she liked to go out and hangout with her friends at the bar. He could see that she was still trying to fight off her hangover from the weekend when she came back to actually work on the following Monday. He wasn’t concerned about that though. “But I need you to say who you’re willing to work with as well. Since they’ll be under you.” He was giving her a lot of responsibility around here. She was having issues with the fact that she thought she didn’t work hard enough for the money he gave her. So she could have more responsibility. She earned that too. “I didn’t want to inform anyone about Lucas. It was just me who knew that I was aware of what he was doing. I wanted to keep it that way.” He stepped out of his pants, picking them up and putting them on the chair, along with her dress. “I think we should stop, maybe drink some champagne,” he said teasingly.

“I wasn’t all that professional. I did somewhat intentionally push your buttons, with that puzzle.” She grinned somewhat sheepishly at him. She had no doubt that he could read her well, though. It was what he did. “This is my payment for making your clients so nice and well mannered by the time to get you, right?” She teased. She furrowed her eyebrows, “You stripped me down just to tease me with more champagne? I’m done with my glass.” She insisted, giving him a somewhat suggestive look.

“Right.” She nodded in agreement. For Jason, taking down Nick wouldn’t be anything, really. “Okay.” She smiled up at him. She felt like he wouldn’t lie to her about that. If he didn’t want her touching him, or tracing over his scars, or running her fingers through his hair, he would say something about it, or she would be able to see it in the way he acted. “You could be. You could have taken up a different name, and gone somewhere other than Gotham…” She thought it was simple, really. He was smart enough to pull it off, she was sure of it.

“Do you want me to do that?” He asked her seriously. “I can stop him, for good. I just need to know if that’s what you want.” She had expressly told him that she wanted to be involved when he took down Black Mask, and that she wanted him to make him suffer and be inconvenienced like she was. He had to be sure that if he met this Nick character, that he could take him out just like that, or if she wanted something more out of this. “I like you touching me,” he elaborated. “There are certain parts of myself that I haven’t liked, since after the pit, but you make those things better.” So he wasn’t going to make her stop, it soothed him and he was sure it made her feel better or closer too. “Like this,” he pulled back just slightly to trace his finger over the larger scar on his torso. “It’s from the crowbar. It’s not so bad when you touch it though.” She liked him this way. His scars didn’t put her off, and she liked that. “I couldn’t be though. I can logically leave this life and world behind, but I can’t. Not emotionally. This is what I know, this is the mindset that I am in. I’m Jason Todd, from Gotham City, New Jersey. That’s the way it is.”

“You mean you’re going to kill him?” She asked, furrowing her eyebrows just slightly. “No, he’s not really that dangerous. Not compared to other people. All you need to do is scare him off. Really. That’s all he requires.” And that was really all she thought he needed. He would back off a lot easier than someone like Black Mask. “That’s good for me, because I like touching you.” She smiled, running her fingers back considerably farther than usual, through his hair. She looked down at the large scar he was touching now, looking a bit upset with herself when he mentioned it was from the crowbar. Now that she knew what the crowbar was. She moved to run her fingers over it, though, “I like your scars. All of them.” She smiled slightly. “No matter what they’re from.” She looked at him sadly, “I’m not expecting you to, so don’t worry. I just expect you to not get yourself killed, or close to it.” She gave him a quick kiss. “From Jersey.” She teased, imitating the way he said Jersey.

“I suppose you don’t. And I don’t have anything to hide from you,” he informed her. He wasn’t hiding anything so much as he was running from his own problems, because they hurt and they scared the hell out of him. “No, he wasn’t thinking of that, and look at the problems he caused. He sure wanted to act like you were in a relationship by branding you.” He frowned, shaking his head. He leaned his head down to press a kiss against her forehead. “You know I’ll do what I can to protect you.” He was still holding onto her hand tightly. He really hated the memory. It wasn’t pleasant at all. “A Lazarus Pit… There are only a few in the world. No one knows what it really is, chemically. But Ra’s, he’s centuries old. He just goes into it and he’s youthful again. He decided to use it to revive me. It was…painful, at first. It was like I woke up and could feel every single place that I had been hit with that crowbar and everywhere that I was injured from the explosion blast. And when I came out… I don’t know. I freaked out. I pulled myself out of the pit and I ran… The Lazarus Pit is exactly what gave me the white streak. I’m not sure how, but I didn’t have it until I came out of there.” That was why he hated it before, but he was liking it more now, if only because of the attention that Alva gives it. She liked it. “I found my way back here after about five years. And you know what I found? Joker… Alive, and still killing people…”

She smiled, giving him a quick kiss. She appreciated the fact that he didn’t feel the need to hide things from her anymore. She understood why he had, though. “It wasn’t like that.” She shook her head for emphasis. “It was more like I was his property.” That had been abundantly clear to her. That she need not forget that he made her how she was, good or bad, because it seemed to benefit her. She kept up with her fingers in his hair, trying to bring him some kind of relief from the obviously distressing memories. She frowned slightly, moving on from the streak when he mentioned the pit gave it to him. “I thought you just used peroxide or something.” She teased, trying to get him to at least smile. “So you came back and took up the Red Hood costume, because Joker was still alive?” She asked, trying to make certain she understood.

They had been together long enough and she had unwavering faith in him the entire time. She believed him when he said that he was Jason Todd, and believed him when he said that he was technically dead but alive. She believed everything with no proof or explanation, so telling her everything was the least he could do for the faith she had in him. “You were his property, and nothing else. You could have sex but it wasn’t a relationship… Well, you’re not his property and if I see him, that will be made clear to him.” He would have a few unkind things to say to Nick if he ever had the displeasure of meeting him. And he really hoped that he came across him. He noticed the way her fingers moved from that streak in his hair. “It’s okay, I know you like it. And it doesn’t bother me anymore.” He chuckled, smiling slightly at her attempts to cheer him up. “You caught me, it really is just peroxide. It’s a lot of touching up to be convincing.” He teased lightly. “I came back and took on Red Hood because this city needed to be cleaned up. The way Batman was doing it wasn’t working, and it still isn’t. So I was using my own methods, which he doesn’t like. Joker was a part of it though, and I almost had him…” He sighed, that story was another big one, that night when he almost had Joker.

“Just don’t go getting yourself hurt so bad you stumble home and I have to patch you up again.” That was all she asked, really. She could handle it every now and again, but she just watched him stitch his own arm up from a wound he didn’t even realize was deep at the time. “Are you sure?” She asked, watching him closely before moving her attention back to the streak. She smiled, “I knew it. You’re touching it up nightly, aren’t you? That’s what happened to all our peroxide while you were staying over.” She teased. “Why not just… be normal, though?” She really was just curious. “You could have just slipped into a normal life, right?”

“I won’t get hurt that bad. You don’t have to worry about that. This guy can’t be too hard to take down, right?” Although he had told her earlier that he was always getting hurt and he just hid it from her. He felt bad keeping secrets from her. It didn’t seem fair at all, especially when he had made her a promise. He had gone back on that promise a lot though. He needed to actually hold up his end of the deal, unless he wanted her to finally get upset at him and tell him they were done. He didn’t think he could handle that. “I’m sure. It’s fine, really,” he nodded at her. He liked her fingers in his hair in general. “That’s exactly what happened to all the peroxide,” he said jokingly. “I couldn’t just be normal because that’s not the life that I know. I left a specific life behind when I was 15. That’s the life I was trained in and what I had grown to know. And when I recovered from the Pit, then I continued training myself. I’m not suited for any normal life. I am dead too… How can I really pretend to be normal?” It doesn’t change the fact that he was broken and just messed up in general.

“We both know my thoroughness benefits us both in the end.” When he was thorough, he was more attentive. He paid attention to her reactions, and made sure she was pleased in every way possible on nights like these. So it worked out for her in the long run anyways. “You were first. And you have a cemented spot in my life. There’s nothing to worry about.” He wasn’t going to just drop her like that and find someone else. He was in this for the long haul. They’d been doing this for months now. He gave her a knowing look. “We had both been dropping hints all morning. I wouldn’t have invited you into my office if you were going to threaten sexual harassment. Definitely by the time we were kissing I was certain you weren’t going to complain.” He didn’t take unnecessary risks. Joking around with an employee was different than actually having sex with them. He made sure that he wasn’t taking any unnecessary risks before suggesting she come into his office. “I know they’re hard to break, but you’ve done a good job.” He reassured her. She had a hard time at first, and she still had her moments, but it was a lot better now. It would perhaps be different if he was expecting her to relinquish every bit of control to him in every aspect of her life. He wasn’t sure she could do that, not to mention it could be exhausting. He slid her dress down to her hips. “Lift your hips,” he told her, waiting for her to listen so that he could pull her dress completely off.

If she were honest, she was more worried about it benefiting him than her. She knew that, at times, at least, he was more worried about her being satisfied.  ”I’m not worried. I get to give my opinion on the new employees before you interview them. I know that has a bit of sway, no matter how tiny.” She smiled slightly. She was sure they would get a diverse little cast of coworkers once he had all the positions filled. They couldn’t all be little clones of him, or Mike. It just wouldn’t work. “I didn’t think that little banter we had would turn into that, though.” That was obvious by how uncertain she had been, that first time. They worked together well now, though. She smiled when he was saying she had done a good job, because she really had tried. “At least my effort hasn’t gone unnoticed.” She lifted her hips up at his urging, moving her hands down to his belt and looking up at him expectantly for a moment, giving him enough time to say no if he felt the need, before working the tail loose and getting the buckle loose.

He paid attention her needs and took care of her, but that didn’t mean he didn’t end up satisfied either. She should know that. He still was a bit of a hedonist, and he still wanted to end up satisfied himself as well. He just made sure she was as well. “That does have a bit of sway. You’re the person who has to work with them the most, and you can see how they’re acting before they go into the interview.” They would have a lot of people coming through now that it was more attractive to work with him because he was making a name for himself. And he trusted Alva to find them decent people. She would be with them more than he would be anyways. “I wasn’t anticipating that banter leading that way. I honestly had been trying to see what you had done with Alberto that night and whether you got me information instead of hickeys.” He had noticed those at the time, but had never said anything to her about it because it wasn’t his place then. “Your effort never goes unnoticed. I’ve seen everything that you have done for me, and us.” He got her dress off before nodding his head at her when she looked up at him with her hands at his belt. He got his undershirt pulled off before taking the time to look her over.

“Good, I think I can thoroughly make it up to you,” he chuckled. “You know that I’m a very thorough man.” He chuckled quietly. When he had stopped worrying so much about not getting thrown back into Arkham, he was able to relax a little. He couldn’t tell her that he was risking his freedom by being with her. “You were different. And I wouldn’t with her because I already have someone. I can’t dip both hands in the pot. I’m not greedy like that. I wasn’t professional, but it worked out well.” He waited for her to get his last button done before slipping his shirt from his shoulders and tossing it on the chair. “You are better about it now, I know.” She had made leaps and bounds since he first suggested this. She had to make some changes, but she had done really well.

She giggled, “I’m well aware of how thorough you are,” She reminded him. “I was first.” She shot him a knowing look, like she thought he probably would try with any new girl that tickled his fancy a bit, if it weren’t for her. She really didn’t doubt that he would, if he thought they could handle it. “I guess you’re just lucky I didn’t push you off and threaten sexual harassment. Though you were probably certain I wouldn’t by the time you had me on your desk.” She was certain he was, actually. “Some habits are harder to break than others.” And he had to be aware of that. She was a very dominant person in everyday life, it was a big switch to suddenly be submissive to someone else on a regular basis. She wanted to, though.

“Yeah,” he nodded with a small smile. “I let you in on a lot too.” It just seemed fair. She could understand why he had so many issues and was so broken if he told her. He still hadn’t told her about his death and the Pit… It was the most important. He got more comfortable with him cuddling closely to him. He would tell her… “And he used you for whatever else he saw fit too…” For example, sex. Which made her feel more connected to him, obviously… “What can I do? I want to help. So you don’t have to be worried about him always being right there. I don’t like it, Alva.” He didn’t want another person threatening her life. She was trying to reassure him but he still felt angry. She was only 18. She was still a kid almost. “There’s one big thing I haven’t told you about,” he told her, knowing she would realize he was talking about his death.

“So it’s only fair that I tell you things, too, right?” She smiled reassuringly. She wasn’t sure why she hadn’t extended that courtesy to Ruelas, yet. All she knew was something happened when she went out of the country, and whatever happened changed her considerably. “I… possibly initiated that.” She admitted, a bit sheepishly. She was naive back then, and she thought that that would somehow cement their partnership into a real relationship. She knew better, now. “I don’t know if there is anything you can do…” She admitted, with a quiet sigh. “I can give you his name. You can listen out for him, I guess.” She knew he had his ears to the ground, and Nick would be asking questions wherever he was. “Nicholas Pratt.” She offered. She furrowed her eyebrows slightly, focusing on the white streak on his hair again. “You don’t have to tell me, if you don’t want, Jason.” She wasn’t going to force him to tell her anything.

“I suppose it would only be fair. But you know I’m not going to make you tell me anything that you don’t want me to know,” he reminded her. He didn’t force her to tell him anything, especially when he had really only been around her for four months. He did like to know these things though. “Oh, you initiated it. Well, you were young. And he should have known better. And stopped.” But instead he gave in to Alva and let her think that it was going to make them stronger and be in a relationship… “I can stop him the instant that he steps foot in Gotham. And I will. I’ll listen for the name, or anyone asking about you.” And he would be on that as quickly as he could. He wasn’t going to let any Nicholas Pratt lay a hand on her.” He sighed quietly, trying to focus on her fingers in his hair. “I want to tell you. You deserve to know.” He looked down, grabbing her free hand as his way of anchoring himself down. “The Joker grabbed me… He took me to some warehouse and beat me with a crowbar. I was really hurt, but alive. He had set a bomb though, and the timer had run out. Batman was too late… There’s this guy, you don’t know him. Ra’s al Ghul… He took my body and put me in a Lazarus Pit… That’s how I’m alive right now…”

“I don’t have anything to hide from you, though.” She smiled. It wasn’t like he threatened to leave her or something if she didn’t tell him exactly what he wanted to know. “Well I guess he wasn’t thinking about that.” She sighed quietly. She had just been wanting something more out of their time together. She was away from home, and instead of relaxing and having time to explore some options and enjoy herself, Nick waltzed in and kind of took over everything. She nodded, smiling slightly at him. “Thanks.” She twisted the lock of white hair around her finger, still being as gentle as possible. “Okay…” She furrowed her eyebrows slightly when he grabbed her hand. She knew exactly what this was about, and he seemed so set on telling her. She ran her thumb across his hand in an attempt to calm him down slightly. She watched him carefully as she listened to him recount this. “A Lazarus Pit?” She asked, having no idea what that was. Apparently, it resurrected people from the dead, though.

“You poor precious little thing,” he said teasingly. “I’m not sure how you will ever survive. Do you think that you will make it?” He chuckled quietly to himself, shaking his head. “I never said I would fall for her. I just said she might try to win me over wearing whatever it is she wears. There’s a difference there.” He could see that smile working up at the corners of her mouth though. He couldn’t help but smile down at her. She knew that she really had nothing to worry about with him. He was certain she was aware of this. They had a good relationship going and their dynamic worked. He hadn’t required her to completely give over every ounce of control to him, because he wasn’t so sure she could handle that. So he could have moments like this with her, where he was completely serious all the time. “Yes, I suppose that would also be learning.” She liked the push buttons sometimes. He got her zipper all the way down, and pulled her dress from her shoulders.

“I know,” She pouted, shaking her head, “No, I’m not sure I will make it. I’m very upset about this.” She sniffled slightly, which she knew put it over the top, but this whole thing was pretty over the top anyway. “Not much of one. You would probably give her attention just to hurt me.” She knew he would never. He wouldn’t do something like that just to get at her. He didn’t bring other people into this, even unwitting ones. She was having a harder time keeping her smile to herself when he was smiling down at her like that, though. “Should you really be punishing me just for trying to learn something?” She shrugged her shoulders when he pulled her dress away from them, pulling her arms free from it before moving to start on  the rest of the buttons on his shirt.

“How can I ever make all of this up to you? I would never forgive myself if you didn’t survive this.” He had that very exaggerated concerned tone in his voice. He was amused by this though. “Would I do something like that? Give the new girl attention that is anything more than professional? You think so little of me, Alva,” he teased her. He didn’t play games like that though. They both new that. He didn’t have to bring anyone else into what they were doing. He preferred that it stay just between them. “If I let you get away with doing something that I don’t want you to do, then you’ll think you can just continue doing it. You know I give you warnings when you’re learning. It’s up to you whether you heed my warning or not.” He pushed her dress down to her waist before getting his cuffs open so she could pull his shirt off when she got the buttons down.

“I don’t know, but I think you’re maybe on the right track.” She let a smile break out across her face, finally. She loved this, when he wasn’t being so serious about everything. It happened more often, now. “I don’t know, you did it with me.” She shot him a knowing look. “No, I think very highly of you, really.  But you weren’t exactly professional with me.” She reminded him. She smiled, pulling the tails of his shirt up and getting the last button undone before pulling back from him. “I’m better about it, now.” He had to give her some credit. He had been doing this for… she wasn’t sure how long. This was the first time she had ever done anything like this, and she had habits that needed to be broken.
